Shada should be out of the yard next late week. New racing bottom, new standing rod rigging, new furler, new halyard sheaves, new turnbuckles so we can tune the rig, rudder inspected, we now have our steaming light back and the rotten anchor locker bulkhead was repaired.
Anticipating the first race to be Sloop Tavern’s Blakely Rock race on Saturday, April 9th. Before then need to get an update on crew availability and bring your attention to a few other key items:
-
- Before then we need to tune the new rig but time is short and depends on when I get Shada back to Shilshole. The default day will be Sunday, April 3rd if a good weather window. Backup options will be Friday, April 1st or Wednesday, April 6th. We won’t need a full crew as some tuning will be done at the dock, then go out and see how she handles starboard and port tacks. Some of this will be a little boring, but if reasonable winds then need around 5 crew. So go into the Crew Page and select if you are available (see below).
- If you are not crewing with us this year, let me know I’ll take you off the automated announcement and crew list.
- I set up all the core and potential races for this year. We can add others if we want to. Within each event, I listed details about the race (click on the event and it will bring up details). They are all listed on the Shada Crew Manager website (https://shada.crew-mgr.com ) within the CALENDAR Page. You can view in list mode or switch to the calendar view by selecting the Monthly view to the right.
- Log in with your user ID/password to the Shada Crew Manager website –> CREW Page –> Availability. From there you should see a list of all the tentative races for this year. If you want to look at just the core or potential races you can filter selection by selecting the category option within the Categories Folder. (It won’t toggle between the two, select and deselect the one sub-category you want.) Please sign up for the races you can do as either yes/no/maybe. Then I can start planning for the races. If possible, sign up for races through June but the most critical would be if you can do the Blakely Rock Race and PSSR in April.
- Other races to contemplate and will need answers sooner than later. 1) do we want to do either of SYC distance races, Smith Island end of April, and/or Vashon Island Race in mid-May? Both are potential over-nigh races and will take some planning.
- Coaching with Andrew is scheduled for Sat/Sun May 21/22nd. If possible please attend. The format will likely be 1-2 hours of classroom in the morning then out of the water for several hours and try to finish by mid-late afternoon. Will will also be doing Saftey-at-Sea drills. I’ll send out the agenda and schedule later but if there are agenda items you would like to practice let me know.
- June weekends may be a little crowded. We have J-Fest Sat/Sun June 11/12th, but what about Race Week a week later? We need to commit and plan now. It is racing Monday-Friday about 2-3 races/day of Anacortes. Will need arrangements for lodging and also delivery of Shada up and back. Please mark availability in the Calendar. I haven’t separated into each day yet, but need consensus if we are doing this race. To do well we need a full crew of 7-9 and need to know whether or not to recruit other crew.
- Start thinking about (and selecting availability for the event) for Round the County in November. It can be a challenging race and does take some planning now if we are going to do it.
- Wednesday racing is as last year starting mid-April
- I also updated the BOAT and LINK Page on the website. Take a look, the BOAT page has pictures and results. The LINK Page lists all important links for our program. Try it out. If any of the links don’t work let me know.
- That is it for now, if you are having troubles logging in or forgot your user ID or password let me know. The log-in page and entering credentials is a little quirky.
- If you have questions send a reply using the “Reply To” email address in this email or easier, go to the website, log-in –> HOME page, and click on this post title to see full text and reply at the bottom.
- Hope to see you in a few weeks and finally get back out on the water!

Wednesday Spring Series #1 update
When you get a chance, update your availability for Wednesday. Would be nice to know the final tally by Tuesday night. It will dictate if we are racing on Wednesday. Right now only 4 confirmed. (Alex I added you in case of a last-minute change, but based on what you said on Sunday planning that you are out).
As before dock time is 17:30 and leave at 18:00. Right now just the new sails on the boat. By default will use them, but I may be able to get the old ones to the boat on Wednesday. Will need extra time to put the main on.
Weather: Current forecast shows rain and winds around 10-12 kts. A few models push it into the mid-teens. There is a moderately intense low pressure moving through Wednesday. Depending on if it arrives on time and/or if it enters Puget Sound more to the north or south those factors can cause a big shift in the wind forecast.
Watch for late-minute notices and announcements (Tuesday night or even Wednesday AM). Depending on # of crew confirmed and if forecasts changes we may not get race #1 in. If the forecast gets into the upper teens with rain and short # of crew then may not go out. I'll keep you posted.

WEDNESDAY RACE#2 DEBRIEF:
It was great being on the boat Wednesday Greetings! Here is my first draft, please correct as add any details you remember. Thanks. -Rich
Summary
SI's were just released. If you want to review all race documents, they are linked on the event page (below CYC insignia). Scroll over and click. I will bring printed copies.
Finally Drew Zangle will be joining us for one or both days. He has raced with us before , is a very good sailor. He now crews with Lodos, another J/109 but she was sold and the skipper just bought a J/111 so they are without a boat for a bit. On the day(s) he crews my plan will be for him to trim headsail and coach the other trimmer. Then trimmer#2 will rotate out and learn pit. After first race then flip-flop for the next race. This should minimize the time the back of the boat has to instruct and will help bring the new trimmers up to speed faster.
Let me know if any other issues, see you at 0930. J
